ANGELA SAXON - ARTIST STATEMENT

Perceiving Nature

My work is an exploration of nature—my attempt to describe the natural world. I am making paintings, and so my work is about paint: not skies and water, trees and clouds. A natural deconstruction of imagery takes place in the rendering, a break with the literal. By allowing the medium to emerge—flowing marks, moving paint, surface textures— I am approaching an interpretation of the sublime in nature.

I begin my paintings direct from the landscape, focusing on expressive movements in nature—the
sweep of a hill, the patterns in water, the drama of a sky. The paintings explore the way in which we
perceive nature, leading a viewer to discover intimate details in a landscape that might otherwise be
missed, yielding a sense awareness.
